Hyundai and its New Horizons Studio subdivision continue working on what they call Ultimate Mobility Vehicles, or UMV for short. After premiering the Elevate Concept back in 2019, the research team is back with another rover named Tiger X-1.
The abbreviation unfolds into “Transforming Intelligent Ground Excursion Robot”. Unlike the Elevate, the Tiger is designed to carry equipment and cargo rather than people. Its technical specs remain unannounced, and we suspect the developers themselves may not have a clear idea about those.
The prototype is rather lightweight owing to extensive use of compounds, and features numerous 3D-printed parts. The company says it is considering launching a whole lineup of such transports in the future. The default powertrain is electric and battery-based, but other options are also under investigation.
Hyundai admits that the South Korean military is the primary customer it has in mind right now, but the Tiger should really lend itself to a wide variety of other uses, including even a Lunar rover (see our gallery for some 3D renderings).
