Several Hyundai Nexos – self-driving, hydrogen-powered SUV prototypes – have successfully travelled without human assistance from Seoul, capital of South Korea, to Pyeongchang, capital of the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Each Hyundai Nexo prototype is equipped with some fourth-generation self-drive tech (according to SAE) working together with a 5G mobile link. Among other things, this means that the self-driving car is capable of identifying other moving vehicles, staying in the lane, changing lanes and overtaking other cars when necessary.
All Hyundai Nexo SUVs come equipped with a 163-hp electric motor and a battery set sufficient for a driving range of 590 kilometers (370 miles).
A company representative says that the first Nexo cars will make it to the streets in 2020, but their fully autonomous, self-driving counterparts won’t be released on the mass market until 2030s.
