Hyundai charging car buyers $170 for theft protection

Hyundai-Kia has launched a vehicle safety kit that costs $170 and fits all cars with regular ignition keys. The option was developed to counteract the recent surge in car thefts prompted by TikTok challenges.

The corporation did not elaborate on what is included in the kit. All we know at the moment is that it takes two and a half hours to install. The Drive also points out that the price does not include free installation. Taking into accounts the average fees in U.S. dealerships, safeguarding your Kia or Hyundai against theft could cost you an extra $500 in installation costs.

As well, the company agreed to hand out mechanical steering locks to all potentially affected Kia and Hyundai car owners for free.

The criminal TikTok challenge gained popularity a few months ago, leading to car theft rates in some U.S. states surging by more than a thousand percent. Hyundai-Kia has already been slapped with 15 class action suits, The Drive reports.
