Media have unearthed a patent in the German Patent Office database that automaker Hyundai received for a walking car. The company teased the original concept years ago and hinted that production was actually considered. Now that the vehicle has been patented, it looks closer to reality than ever.
Dubbed the UMV, it beats every other off-roader on Earth in terms of sheer terrain adaptability. Four swiveling supports enable it to step over tall obstacles and move sideways in a pinch. The ground clearance is adjusted on the go and can reach 1.5 meters (nearly 5 feet). The pod can be used for transporting people or cargo.
Hyundai reckons that the UMV may find actual use in search and rescue operations in dangerous areas.
