Ioniq, Genesis & Kia EVs confirmed to have malfunctioning brake lights

A recent investigation by Consumer Reports has arrived at the conclusion that all-electric cars from Ioniq, Genesis and Kia brands fail to turn on their taillights when regenerative braking is engaged.

The issue is that electric vehicle drivers have two ways of braking: by stepping on the brake pedal and passively, by releasing the accelerator. In the latter case, the car starts losing speed fast and should let the driver behind it know that regenerative braking is applied. Some of the EVs from the brands listed above fail to light up the brake signals, though.

The study points out that not all Hyundai-Kia Group vehicles are affected. Exceptions include Genesis GV60 and GV70, Kia EV6 and Niro, and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
