Hyundai Ioniq 5 launched in the UK, priced much higher than promised

The first batch of 3,900 Ioniq 5 EVs has just been imported to Great Britain and is available starting from £48,145, although the local Hyundai office mentioned expecting something closer to £36,995.

A transporter ship named Silver Ray covered around 12,000 marine miles to bring the cars to the shores of the United Kingdom. All in all, customers in Europe met the model with great enthusiasm and made around 235,000 pre-orders.

The Ioniq 5 is the first mass-produced car to come based on the E-GMP architecture designed specifically for EVs. It comes with four powertrain options: two RWD ones rated at 170 and 235 PS (168 and 232 hp; 125 and 173 kW, respectively) and two AWD ones capable of 217 and 305 PS (214 and 301 hp; 160 and 225 kW).

Batteries also come in two sizes – 58.2 and 72.6 kilowatt-hours – and translate into 386–689 km (240–428 miles) of WLTP-rated driving range. Topping up the charge from 20% to 80% only takes 15 minutes.
