Hyundai Motor Company and Motional have co-developed an autonomous taxicab powered by the Ioniq 5 platform. The car is expected to reach the market in 2023.
The self-driving system on board is estimated at SAE Level 4 out of 5. This means that the driver’s seat and the controls are still in the car, but it can go fully autonomous nonetheless.
Compared to the standard Ioniq 5, the robotaxi features a plethora of sensors (over 30 in total) including cameras, radars and lidars. Passengers get a UI through which they can interact with the robot. If the taxi happens to find itself in a challenging situation (e.g., road under construction), a remote operator will bring it back on route.
More details will be revealed at the IAA Bobility expo starting in a few days.
