The jury board of the European Car of the Year Award has posted a list of seven runners-up for this year’s prize. Six are EVs, and the seventh is available as a hybrid.
The runners up are Cupra Born, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Peugeot 308, Renault Megane E-Tech, and Skoda Enyaq iV. Out of these, the Peugeot is the only one available with an internal combustion engine in the Old World, and it has a plug-in hybrid variant as well.
Not a single Japanese car is on the list, despite the fact that the last year’s award went to the new Toyota Yaris hatchback. The situation is the same with Chinese marques.
A team of 61 jury members, all of them car journalists, will decide on the winner and announce its name on February 28, 2022.
In other recent news, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has already become the Car of the Year in Germany (see video), additionally scoring the New Energy award. Its technical twin – the Kia EV6 – won the prize in the Premium category.
