Unofficial: Ioniq 5 N shaping up to be as powerful as BMW M5

Hyundai still hasn’t decided on the performance level of its Ioniq 5 N SUV, but it could reach as high as 620 PS (612 hp / 456 kW), Albert Biermann, ex-CEO of Hyundai N, told xDrive.

This would bring the Korean electric SUV on par with the BMW M5 Competition, which squeezes 625 PS (616 hp / 460 kW) out of its V8.

The remaining specifications are still undisclosed, though, and Hyundai is probably still deciding how much power it wants its sported-up crossover to churn out. According to Biermann, the discussed range is between 580 PS (572 hp / 427 kW) and 620 PS.

Why hold back? Because an electric car must also handle well and bring vivid positive emotions, Biermann argues. Perhaps this is why the Ioniq 5 N is slated to get the so-called Drift Mode: drivers will be able to redirect most of the torque to the rear axle when needed.

Hyundai is already testing the car, but the launch date is still unannounced.
