The South Korean car manufacturer has unveiled a new wheel design that combines metal spokes and hub with a carbon-fiber rim. The first production car to get a wheel set like this one will be the Ioniq 5 N (see video).
The design is said to shave off up to 40-50 percent of the wheel weight while improving durability and stiffness. Thanks to the weight reduction, EVs will travel more on a charge.
Dymag, the company behind the project, believes that the hybrid approach to wheel manufacturing is preferable to trying to manufacture car wheels completely from carbon fiber. Combining metal spokes with CPF rims helps streamline production and make the final product compatible with all kinds of vehicles.
