At the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring race that took place last weekend, Hyundai has announced participation in another prestigious motorsports event – the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The company will be taking as many as four SUVs to the competition, including two near-stock ones and two heavily tuned racers.
The first two Ioniq 5 N models will be equipped with Recaro seats, six-point safety harnesses, a fire extinguishing system and a roll cage. Other than that, they will be no different from the mass-market models, letting them compete in the Production SUV category.
The other two are known as the Ioniq 5 N TA (Time Attack) Spec. As the name suggests, they are serious machines having little to do with stock. Working with its eN1 Cup racer, Hyundai has additionally outfitted the car with large anti-wings and numerous other high-end aerodynamic components to maximize downforce. The rear motor was boosted by 37 PS (36 hp / 27 kW) by software means, resulting in a combined dual-motor output of 687 PS (678 hp / 505 kW).
Aside from these upgrades, both TA Spec vehicles benefit from adjustable suspension, racing-spec brakes and 18-inch wheels shod in slick tires. Last but not least, the company has replaced the audio speakers in its N Active Sound+ system to reproduce up to 120 decibels’ worth of imitated engine sounds.
