World Car of the Year jury reveals the winner for 2022

The team behind the World Car of the Year competition has attended the ongoing New York International Auto Show to declare the Hyundai Ioniq 6 the absolute winner of the competition.

The all-electric vehicle came ahead of the BMW X1/iX1 and the Kia Niro. It also led in the EV category of the competition, effortlessly outpacing the BMW i7 and the Lucid Air. It was even praised for its exceptional exterior design, coming first in a top-3 list that also included the Lucid Air and the latest Range Rover.

In another highlight of the show, 100 automotive industry media reporters from 32 countries all around the world have named the Lucid Air the best luxury car ever. The electric vehicle designed by a U.S.-based startup stole the spotlight from the BMW 7-Series and the Genesis G90.

The Kia EV6 GT inched out a victory in the ‘Sports Car’ category, leaving behind the Nissan Z and the Toyota GR Corolla. The Citroen C3 was recognized as the best urban car with the VW Taigo and the Ora Funky Cat trailing behind.

Per the regulations, all participating vehicles must be manufactured in volumes of at least 10,000 units and be present on at least two of the following leading world markets: China, Europe, India, Japan, South Korea, Latin America and the United States.

All winners this year were either EVs or cars with battery-electric counterparts available.
