The new Tesla Model 3 Long Range landed on the 10th position in the ranking of the fastest-charging EVs composed by Edmunds based on real-world tests. Six positions in the top list went to Hyundai/Kia cars, while the remaining three were claimed by German premium brands. Remarkably, the car in the first place charges up about five times as fast as the car in the tenth.
To compose their rating, the authors of the study measured the distance that the EV could travel after an hour of charging from a sufficiently fast charging station. The single-motor Ioniq 6 Limited (see video) crowned the list with 1,397 kilometers (868 miles) of theoretical driving range from an hour of charging. In reality, though, the charging was over in less than an hour.
The single-motor Kia EV6 landed a close second with 1,238 km (769 miles) of range. The dual-motor Ioniq 6 came third with 1,230 km (764 miles) of extrapolated range from an hour of charging. The Tesla Model 3 only managed 916 km (569 miles). The Porsche Taycan 4S, Kia EV6 GT Line, dual-motor Ioniq 5, Mercedes-Benz EQS 450, Genesis GV80 Electrified and Porsche Taycan GTS rounded off the list with progressively worse results.
The study encompassed 43 battery-electric vehicles from different countries. The Chevrolet Bolt landed on the last line with 277 km (172 mi).
Edmunds also tried finding out which EVs took the least time to top up for 160 km (100 miles) of driving. Korean vehicles once again landed on top of the rest: the Ioniq 6 and the Kia EV6 only need to stay between 6:54 and 7:51 plugged into a charger before they can go 100 miles. For perspective, the Chevy Bolt takes its sweet time with a result of 34 minutes 49 seconds.
