When the Kona N debuts in the second half of 2020, it will try to fight the Volkswagen T-Roc R for customers’ wallets. In the meantime, its prototype has flashed its sported-up looks on the Nürburgring.
Differences from the standard-issue Kona include the exhaust system, better brakes, new wheels, and lower suspension. Rumor has it that the SUV might get the i30 N powertrain, which means a two-liter T-GDI unit capable of between 250 and 275 horsepower (186 and 205 kilowatts, respectively). Other likely features include six-speed manual transmission and FWD.
The top trim version of the regular Kona (see video) packs a 177-hp (132-kW) engine linked to a seven-speed DCT transmission. It accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.7 seconds and maxes out at 210 km/h (130 mph). AWD is available as a paid option.
