Hyundai Kona Electric surprises test crew with 1,000+ km of range

Following three days of tests in northeastern Germany, Hyundai claims its Kona Electric SUV can cover up to 1,026 kilometers (637.5 miles) on a single charge.

Three cars have spent 36 hours doing lap after lap on the Lausitzring. The goal was to find out how long they would be able to keep going before the power runs out. The results shown were 1,018.7, 1,024.1 and 1,026 km (633, 636.3 and 637.5 miles, respectively).

The cars were stock except for the tire set used (Nexen N Fera SU1 215/55R17) and came equipped with the marque’s largest battery on offer: 64 kWh. The mean power expenditure per 100 kilometers covered amounted to 6.28, 6.25 and 6.24 kilowatt-hours – much lower than the WLTP-rated 14.7 kilowatt-hours for this model.

The test crew did not use air conditioners or multimedia features only leaving the daytime running lights on as per the traffic regulations. They maintained speed in the 29-31 km/h (18 – 19.3 mph) range, claiming that this is the most typical driving speed in a bustling metropolis.

All three Konas were able to cover another 20 km (12.4 miles) when the charge indicator fell down to 3%, and continued going for another couple hundred of meters even with the charge reading zero.
