UK-based Ineos Automotive has partially unveiled its next production SUV, the Fusilier.
With it, billionaire Jim Ratcliffe and his company continue their tradition of using classic military names for off-road vehicles. Fusiliers were French army grunts back in the 17th century. Compared to the company’s first mass-produced model – the Grenadier – the newcomer is both shorter and less tall. It also has some similar design features, like the front fascia styling with its round headlamps and DRLs on the grille.
That said, Ineos emphasizes that the Fusilier will not be just a downsized version of the Grenadier. It is running on a purpose-designed skateboard chassis and has a body largely composed of stainless-steel panels with aluminum doors. Same as the Grenadier, Ineos promises world-class off-roading capabilities for the Fusilier and just as much handling ease and comfort on the road.
As usual, the production is assisted by Magna Steyr. However, while the Ineos Grenadier SUV and its “Quartermaster” truck version were both made in Hambach, France, the Fusilier will be assembled in Austria by the company itself. Having amassed considerable experience in contract-based EV production, the company says it is ready to become an independent automaker. A number of presale tests will be conducted on the Shöckl Mountain near Graz – the same place where Mercedes-Benz is testing its G-Class off-roaders.
Aside from an all-electric powertrain, there will be a range-extender version based on a petrol power generator. All parameters and availability dates will be announced in the fall.
