The Ineos Grenadier SUV will be getting a hydrogen version co-designed with Hyundai, the British automaker reports.
In an earlier news, the company revealed that its upcoming Grenadier model would ship with BMW six-cylinder engines running on gasoline and diesel fuel. Now that a cooperation agreement was signed with Hyundai, another spec should emerge based on the Nexo electrochemical generator. No details are being provided on the total power or the planned number of motors.
Despite the global trend towards electrification, the UK-based corporation eschewed hybridization and electrification in favor of hydrogen tech – and the reasoning behind the decision seems surprisingly sound. First, hydrogen cars offer about as much range as diesel cars. Second, the group of companies that Ineos is a part of has serious hydrogen production capacities at its disposal, producing around 300,000 metric tons of the industrial gas per year.
In late November, this hydrogen enterprise was separated from the group and given its own headquarters in Great Britain. The company is now looking to expand its hydrogen business in Europe, and producing its own fuel cell car looks like a smart strategy.
