The British carmaker has announced the development of an ‘immersive heads-up display’ capable of stereoscopic imaging. The project is a collaboration between JLR and a team of Cambridge University scientists.
The HUD that the company hopes to design would combine 3D imaging and augmented reality technologies without requiring the users to wear any kind of special glasses. The image projected on the windshield will look as though it is being projected on the road in front of the car instead. Among other things, this will enable each passenger to play back their own media files without disturbing the others.
Jaguar Land Rover points out that this technology would enable the creation of what it calls the ‘intelligent cabin’, a holistic and protected digital environment.
There are no release date estimates currently available. The updated Jaguar F-type (see video) should launch soon, but the 3D HUD tech described above would likely be too rough around the corners for the new F-type to take advantage of it.
