The legendary 1954 Jaguar D-Type Works to be sold at Sotheby's

Sotheby’s has announced its plans to put up a number of famous cars, including the iconic 1954 Jaguar D-Type Works race car, for auction in the spring of 2018.

The vehicle participated at that year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans and set a new record at Mulsanne Straight when it accelerated to a previously unbelievable 274 km/h (170 mph).

From the technical point of view, the car makes intensive use of the most advanced technologies and materials available at the time it was built. To name a few, its monocoque is made of a lightweight magnesium alloy, while the rest of the body is aluminum panels, allowing for a total weight of just 880 kilograms (1,940 lbs).

The good old racer comes equipped with a 3.4-liter V6 engine which outputs 273 hp with 325 Nm torque, and makes 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) in 7.0 seconds.

Auction holders expect the award-winning vehicle with a rich racing history to be sold for anywhere between U.S.D. 12 and 15 million.
