Google’s daughter company Waymo will cooperate with Jaguar Land Rover on building a fully autonomous self-driving car based on the I-Pace crossover SUV. Its initial road tests will begin later this year.
Waymo hopes to produce around 20,000 self-driving Jaguar I-Pace cars over the course of the next two years. Clients will be able to summon a Waymo car to their location quickly using a dedicated mobile app.
The first production-ready Jaguar I-Pace debuted at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show. The car came equipped with two electric engines rated at 200 horsepower (149 kW) each, allowing it to accelerate 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.8 seconds and eventually reach 200 km/h (124 mph). Its driving range was estimated at 500 kilometers (310 miles).
