Starting next year, every single Jaguar and Land Rover vehicle on the lineup has to have an electrified version, the mission of JLR states. The trend began with the 2018 Jaguar I-Pace (depicted here), and both the Jaguar XJ and the Range Rover will be getting their EV counterparts soon. However, the development costs are very high, and this prompts even such giants as JLR to look for partners to team up with. BMW and Geely appear to be the likeliest candidates.
It has to be noted that Jaguar Land Rover has been struggling financially as of late. The corporation lost the equivalent of U.S. $4.6 billion last year and suffered a 5.8% worldwide sales hit (down to 565,000 cars sold total). The demand in China dropped 19.3% between 2017 and 2018 (down to 67,791), then another 32.8% in 2019 (down to 37,810).
To trim down on the expenses, the British company decided to reduce its personnel by 10% (meaning around 4,500 jobs). If things play out as expected, this should enable it to save up to $3.2 billion USD by mid-2020.
That said, looking for a new partner remains a vital priority for JLR. The company already runs a cooperation agreement with BMW on EV R&D; it has no deals going with Geely, but striking one now might give it a chance to reclaim the lost presence in China.
No official confirmation of any of this conjecture exists to date, so take it with a grain of salt.
