Jeep has produced seven-seaters before, Grand Wagoneer and Grand Commander being the main examples. However, emerging markets need something rather more affordable and simple. According to reports, this is what the U.S. automaker is currently working on.
The new affordable MPV will target emerging markets and will be a standalone model based on a stretched Compass chassis. It will pack more engine power than the compass and likely come out in late 2021 to compete with the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Tata Gravitas and Ford Everest.
It will inherit the 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine of the original Compass, but with a boost to approximately 200 hp (150 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque, sources claim. Nine-speed automatic is the likeliest candidate for the transmission.
Test vehicles matching the above description have already been spotted in India and Brazil, so it looks like Jeep is expanding its sales geography with this new model.
