42-year-old Jeep goes on sale for 4x the original price, here’s why

Vigilante 4x4 has put its latest project up on sale: this Jeep J-10 Honcho saw the daylight in the distant year 1981, but has since been meticulously restored and slightly modernized.

The asking price of U.S. $145,000 nearly buys you four entry-spec Jeep Gladiators, but that’s beside the point. The tuner team tore the truck down to the frame and repaired all parts showing even minimal signs of wear. The chrome radiator grille and front bumper were fabricated from scratch, and the interior landed with a new leather trim and modern bucket seats.

Most restomods these days are powered by the latest crate engines, but this one opts for a period-correct 6.57-liter AMC mill. The output is undisclosed. What we do know is that the truck now rides on 35-inch mud tires and has a suspension lift – 100 mm (4 inches) at the front and 150 mm (6 inches) at the rear.

The original Jeep J-10 ran on Cherokee platform and received an option package called Honcho in 1976 (see video). The package added larger wheels shod in off-road tires and a special exterior color.
