Writing’s on the wall for the Jeep V8, anyone surprised?

As environment protection standards grow stricter with each passing day, some powertrains are bound to disappear into history. Jeep is going down this route, too, and it looks like there could be a part-electric V6 ahead.

During the international launch event of the Grand Cherokee (see video), media asking questions about the future of the V8 confronted Jeep CMO. He replied that electrification was the way forward, and that it basically implied saying no to eight-cylinder engines at some point in the future.

“We are still using the V8 on some markets, including the USA, but the reality is such that PHEV is a more premium option now,” he added.

He never specified any replacement candidates, but we would expect a part-electric V6 like that of the Jeep Hurricane Concept (on the photos here) would fit the bill nicely. At three liters large, it normally churns out around 406 PS (400 hp / 298 kW) and can be boosted to 575 PS (567 hp / 423 kW) in a spec called High Output.
