Jeep has filmed a promotional video for its all-electric Wagoneer S model – and it consists of a number of episodes where the SUV surpasses the Tesla Model Y despite not even sharing the same market niche. It is also being compared against a gas-powered Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.
The footage shows a Wagoneer S and a Model Y as they compete in straight-line acceleration and cornering ability on a racetrack. Jeep claims its EV is faster with a 0-96.6 km/h (0-60 mph) sprint time of 3.4 seconds. It also looks beefier on paper with 600 PS (592 hp / 441 kW) and 837 Nm (617 lb-ft) of torque.
When the Model Y has to leave the track and say goodbye, the Wagoneer S continues down a dirt road. Apparently, Jeep is content with comparing the Wagoneer S against a basic crossover utility vehicle. It looks like we shouldn’t be looking forward to any impressive off-road chops here. Range-wise, the Jeep has an estimated 483 km (300 miles) per charge.
Towards the end of the video, Jeep introduces a Grand Cherokee Trackhawk to the race with the narrator in the background saying, “…the real competition is ourselves.” The Wagoneer S barely manages to outpace the marque’s most powerful and fastest SUV by one-tenth of a second.
Why did Jeep pick a Model Y for the comparison if the Wagoneer S if a larger and more luxurious vehicle that also costs more? We suspect that it’s simply due to the popularity of the Tesla in the electric car world.
