Jeep has officially unveiled the plug-in hybrid variant of its Wrangler 4xe SUV that it initially introduced in January this year.
Unlike the Renegade 4xe and the Compass 4xe, the electrified Wrangler got to keep its traditional AWD system and transfer case intact. The main engine is a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder gasoline unit rated at 272 hp (203 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. It is assisted by a starter-generator contributing 45 hp (33 kW) and 53 Nm (40 lb-ft) of its own, as well as a potent electric motor integrated into the eight-speed auto transmission. The latter delivers 136 hp (100 kW) and 245 Nm (183 lb-ft), and the entire system thus makes up to 381 hp (284 kW) and 637 Nm (470 lb-ft) of torque. The battery size amounts to 17.3 kilowatt-hours, which translates into 40 kilometers (25 miles) of all-electric range.
Thanks to its advanced electric configuration, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe exerts more torque at lower speeds and launches faster, the manufacturer says.
Production is already in full swing in Toledo, and sales will begin early next year in the United States, Europe and China. Prices and trim levels are pending.
