Jeep ushers in the last diesel-powered Wrangler

Just as we reported hours ago, Jeep confirmed its intention not to leave Wrangler SUV buyers without at least one diesel option in the new model year. Called the FarOut Edition, it is only going to stay available until the end of this fall; the planned production quantity is unknown.

The main highlight is a large and contrast-rich hood decal saying ‘3.0 Diesel’, which refers to the displacement volume of three liters. Compared to stock, the limited edition also boasts flared fenders finished to match the body, a black radiator grille, original 17-inch wheels and 3.0D badges.

The trim inside uses black leather in combination with red stitching. The equipment on board already incorporates multiple option packs normally available separately. Prices remain to be announced.

When the diesel Wrangler retires, the lineup will consist of petrol engines, including a V8 rated at 470 PS (464 hp / 346 kW), and hybrid drivetrains. The Jeep Gladiator truck based on the same platform will keep its heavy-oil engine intact for now.

Jeep has not issued a comment on discontinuing the diesel Wrangler. The company could be developing an electrical successor: Ram, the brand that equips its 1500 truck with the same engine, mentioned an intention to switch it to electric power a while ago, too.
