Jeep has stepped forward with a presentation of the last instalment in the Wrangler JK series, a four-door Rubicon Unlimited. The Rubicon is positioned as a family car and will be assembled on Jeep’s facilities in Toledo, Ohio, USA.
The base model will ship with a 3.6-liter gasoline engine, but another version will be made available with a two-liter turbocharged engine. Both utilize six-speed manual transmission.
The original Jeep Wrangler JK saw its market debut in 2006 and was met with almost univocal criticism on behalf of the brand fans. Over 2,000,000 vehicles have been produced since, most of them four-door models.
Jeep will now be moving on to the new series, called the JL. Among other things, it will feature reinforced framework and increased use of aluminum body panels for 90 kg (200 lbs.) weight reduction. Each car will get a mild hybrid powertrain comprising a 2.0-liter turbo engine with 272 hp (203 kW), a 48V on-board power system and a starter-generator. There will also be two non-hybrid models, one packing a V6 gasoline engine rated at 285 hp (213 kW) and another shipping with an undisclosed 3.0-liter diesel engine.
