Old Ford Transit morphs into an electric van for China

The new JMC Teshun Touring EV is built on the same chassis as the second-generation Ford Transit introduced 37 years ago.

Customers in Europe had the opportunity to buy the Transit Mk2 until 2003. Ford proceeded to move the production of the van to China, where it was made from 2006 through 2017. The company then rebranded it as ‘JMC Teshun’, and has now produced a battery-powered version on the same old platform.

The drivetrain is represented by a single electric motor driving the front axle with 163 PS (161 hp / 120 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque. The power cell pack stores up to 65 kilowatt-hours of energy and has 300 km (186 miles) of CLTC-rated range. The manufacturer points out that ‘cruising at a constant speed’ can extend the range to 500 km (310 miles), but doesn’t clarify what speed it is supposed to be. Accelerating from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 15 seconds.

Buyers can choose from several body styles ranging from 7 to 11 cubic meters (247.2–388.5 cubic feet).

The sides and the rear end look virtually indistinguishable from those of the normal Ford Transit. The front fascia has been revamped with a larger grille and LED-based headlights. An updated dashboard can be found inside.

The fossil fuel version of the JMC Teshun was updated a year ago and is currently available solely with a 2.8-liter diesel engine good for 122 PS (121 hp / 90 kW). Before the facelift, you could also get a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine. That version got replaced with the EV that debuted this week.
