Kia EV5 undercuts Tesla Model Y in China by nearly 2x

Kia has posted the price list for its new all-electric K5 SUV in China, and it turned out even cheaper than originally announced. Compared to a key competitor – the Tesla Model Y – it is only about half as expensive, starting at just 149,800 Yuan.

The top trim costs 174,800, but that’s still very affordable compared to the 266,400 of the base Model Y.

Having said that, the K5 is only available with one powertrain so far, and it’s nothing to write home about. A sole e-motor makes 218 PS (215 hp / 160 kW) and 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque. The battery stores 64.2 kilowatt-hours of power and runs dry after 530 km (329 miles). Later on, Kia promises to release a long-range version with 720 km (447 miles) in stock.

The same goes for an all-wheel-drive variant, which is set for debut later with the same 218-horsepower engine at the front axle and a new 95-PS (94-hp / 70-kW) engine at the rear.

Europe will be receiving the model as well, but the dates are pending.
