P3 Charging has conducted a study involving applied tests of the most popular North American electric vehicles for charging speeds. The Lucid Air (see video) headed the overall ranking, while the far more affordable Kia EV6 snatched a win in an intermediate category.
The test method involved plugging a car with 10% of its battery charge remaining to an Electrify America 350kW charger for 20 minutes. The Lucid Air GT was able to replenish the most power in these conditions – enough to cover another 335 km (208 miles) of road.
The Tesla Model S Plaid came a close second with 310 km (192 miles), while the single-motor version of Kia EV6 landed third with 307 km (190 miles). Rounding off the top five are two more Teslas – Model 3 and Model Y, to be specific. A cursory glance at the current market prices suggests that the Kia EV6 may be the only relatively affordable fast-charging EV on the list.
Another test conducted in the same manner, but with the charging time reduced to 10 minutes, had the EV6 as the clear winner. The Korean SUV managed to refill enough battery juice to cover 204 km (126 miles). The Lucid Air and the Tesla Model S landed on the second and the third places, respectively, each lagging just a couple of miles behind. The team behind the study explained the results by the technological advantages of the E-GMP platform the Kia was based on. What’s also remarkable is that the EV6 costs approximately $100,000 less than the Lucid Air in the USA.
The full list of contenders included BMW iX and i4, Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, Polestar 2, Porsche Taycan, Rivian R1T and Volkswagen ID.4.
