WCotY-2024 puts names on this year’s best cars

The jury board of the World Car of the Year award has sent representatives to the ongoing auto show in NYC to announce the winners. The list notably lacks non-electrified cars. The Kia EV9 is the overall winner, while BYD hasn’t scored a single award despite making it into the short list earlier.

The main award went to the EV9, a large all-electric SUV that surpassed the BYD Seal and the Volvo EX30 at the finish line.

he Swedish company’s compact SUV didn’t leave without a prize, though. it scored the Urban Car of the Year, coming ahead of the BYD Dolphin and the Lexus LBX in this particular nomination.

Aside from the WCotY title, the EV9 also won EV of the Year, coming ahead of the Volvo EX30 (again) and the BMW i5. In turn, the 5-Series won Premium Vehicle of the Year in both ICE and electric forms. It competed against two Mercedes vehicles in this category – the E-Class and the EQE SUV.

The Hyundai–Kia alliance managed to score another award for itself this year, which went to the Ioniq 5 N. The jury found it a better sports car than BMW’s latest M2 and XM.

The Prius hybrid was Toyota’s only vehicle to make it into the short list this time around, but it nonetheless won the Best Design award. Ford Bronco and Ferrari Purosangue ended as runners-up.

The WCotY jury board comprises 100 automotive industry reporters from 29 countries.
