Koenigsegg strips the side view cameras off the U.S.-spec Gemera

The Koenigsegg Gemera hybrid hypercar sported video cameras instead of conventional side mirrors when it debuted, but it will ship with the latter in the United States.

The hypercar series will emerge in a run of just 300 units, and all units shipped to the USA will have their cameras replaced by mirrors. The U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) prescribe that all road-legal cars nationwide must have side mirrors, no exceptions.

For its part, the Swedish hypercar maker said it hoped that NHTSA would be able to amend the existing legislation so as to allow video cameras soon, and the entire Gemera series would ship with the cameras, as originally intended.

The same option is already considered road-legal in Japan and Europe, where the Lexus ES takes advantage of it since 2018 and the Audi E-Tron since recently.
