Rumors heralding the coming of a successor to the Lambo Aventador line have been circulating for a while. Well, it now looks like the car will arrive in 2020.
According to Lamborghini, the new supercar boasts a hybrid powertrain that consists of a front-axle-mounted electric engine and a naturally-aspirated V12 unit in the back. The all-electric driving range is currently estimated at 20 to 30 kilometers (12 – 20 miles), but dealerships in China say it has to be at least 50 km (31 mi), so changes in design may occur.
The abovementioned engine layout doesn’t just give the car all-wheel-drive capability. It also removes the need to have a separate drive shaft for each axle.
The sports vehicle will inevitably end up heavier than the current-generation Aventador owing to the bulky electric motor and batteries (approx. 200 kg / 440 lb added weight).
On an unrelated note, Lamborghini will release its LB48H hypercar next year. The limited series will include only 63 cars equipped with hybrid powertrains rated at 840 hp (625 kW). Each will cost around U.S. $2,500,000.
