Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Lamborghini, said the company might be interested in joining the FIA World Endurance Championship racing series. This is by no means final, but talks are underway and chances look good.
The Italian supercar maker wants to enter a new FIA WEC category called Hypercars, which should be officially added to the program before the end of 2020. If everything goes as planned, Lambo says it will take its chances in the 24 Hours of Le-Mans in 2021.
It is perhaps worth pointing out that Domenicali used to be the leader of the Ferrari racing team in Formula 1 in 2008–2014. Ever since he assumed the leadership of Lamborghini three years ago, fans have been waiting impatiently for the marque to start participating in new prestigious racing events.
Domenicali openly admits that the company currently lacks the funds to develop a brand-new hypercar from scratch. That said, he emphasizes that Lamborghini still has considerable resources at its disposal, quoting the unique Aventador SVJ-based Lamborghini SC18 as the perfect example.
Such other manufacturers as Aston Martin (which has the Valkyrie) and Toyota (which has the GR Super Sport) have also expressed interest in the Hypercars section of the FIA WEC. The race masters say they expect between 2 and 4 marques to join in the end.
