Cardboard-and-stick Aventador mockup sells for a real car price

David Jones, a blogger from New Zealand, came up with a Lamborghini Aventador replica lovingly made out of cardboard. He had originally intended to sell it for a song, but then betting started, and before he knew it he earned $10,400.

Jones says he found the cutout diagrams for an Aventador paper model online and just upscaled them by a factor of 5.6. He ended up with a mockup 3.78 meters (12.4 feet) long and 1.65 meters (5,4 feet) wide. He used wooden sticks to keep the body together and sourced the wheels from a bike. Despite being what it is, the replica actually has the original’s signature gull-wing doors and a steering wheel that turns the wheels.

It took a month to complete the project. David expected to get something like $50 out of the deal, but got $10,400. He said he would donate the entire sum to a children’s hospital in Oakland where he was treated from cancer when he was 14.

Of course, this would not be the first case of “I couldn’t afford a supercar, so I built one myself”. Not too long ago, a team of enthusiasts from Vietnam made a Bugatti Chiron replica in a couple of weeks using metal, clay and stretch film. They used a toy car as a visual reference and made no attempt to find blueprints or learn the original’s proportions.
