This Italian motorsports icon packs a Chevy Corvette drivetrain under the hood and is currently on sale in Las-Vegas priced at U.S. $105,000. The question is, would you pay?
In 2015, this particular Lamborghini Diablo ditched its humongous six-liter V12 in favor of a General Motors LS3 V8. The tuner boosted the mill to 555 horsepower (414 kW) – the exact performance level of the Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0. So, what was the big idea behind the swap?
Actually, the idea is pretty clever, if not immediately apparent. The original buyer of the car was looking for a Diablo he could drive on an everyday basis, but was repelled by the extreme rarity and pricing of the associated V12 spare parts. The outrageous fuel consumption was another no-go. This was when he came up with the idea to buy a burnt-down Diablo and have it restored with the less demanding and easier-to-maintain U.S. drivetrain components.
Aside from its new core, the Italian engineering marvel of the 1990s received a completely new interior packed with modern niceties and safety aids. With all of this in mind, the $105,000 price tag mentioned above doesn’t appear nearly as outrageous anymore.
