A Lamborghini replica built around two decades ago for Cuban-American baseball player Jose Canseco with first-gen Honda/Acura NSX tech underneath has cropped up on auction with a $175,000 reserve.
Canseco purchased a model year 1999 NSX at the dusk of his sports career when he still earned big. He did not elaborate why he chose to remodel a Japanese supercar instead of buying a genuine Lamborghini Diablo GT.
Perhaps the reason was in the rarity of the latter, which came out in a series of just 80 units. Rather than hunt after the exotic, Canesco went for converting his mid-engined coupe instead. The six-cylinder engine and manual transmission remained without modifications.
The car changed hands twice after it was sold. In the listing, the current seller mentions performing serious maintenance on it, having the body re-finished, new wheels installed, interior re-trimmed and various cosmetic repairs performed.
Per the seller, the car will not appeal to those looking for an authentic Diablo experience, but will be appreciated by those who happen to like Diablo looks and do not feel like going insolvent on maintenance alone.
The bidding has only reached $126,100 so far, which is below reserve, but there is still time on the auction clock.
