Lamborghini hopes synthetic fuels keep ICE cars alive

Lamborghini unveiled its first mass-market plug-in hybrid called Revuelto at the beginning of the year. The company plans to complement its electrified vehicle lineup with a 2025 Urus PHEV next year, and release the second generation of the Urus as a purely electric SUV before 2030. Despite the seemingly total electrification, though, the company harbors hopes for the continued life of the internal combustion engine (ICE).

Speaking with Autocar, CEO Stephan Winkelmann said the company was prepared to wait a few more years to see whether synthetic fuels could allow it to continue making ICE supercars or not.

He pointed out that it was much easier to keep the ICE drivetrain in place and modify it to accept synthetic fuels than to design a whole EV from scratch, complete with motors and a massive battery pack.
