Lamborghini to invest nearly €2B into lineup electrification

The Italian carmaker plans to invest at least €1.8 billion into switching to hybrid powertrains by 2024 and all-electric ones later, Reuters reports quoting company CEO Stephan Winkelmann.

Lamborghini announced earlier this year that it would be its last year producing ICE-only cars. In 2023, the company plans to introduce us to a new serial hybrid (otherwise known as the range extender hybrid) vehicle.

Earlier estimations suggested the company would need €1.5 billion to implement its development strategy, but a decision has now been made to spend even more. This is the most the company has ever spent in its history for any single tech upgrade.

However, as Winkelmann himself admitted, the actual R&D costs will be even higher than that because the investment will only be enough to lay the foundations for designing fully electric vehicles. Actually developing and producing one will require even more expenditure. The first Lambo EV is expected to come out in 2025.

Back in 2019, the automaker previewed its first hybrid car – the Sian coupe packing a V12 and a rather modest electric motor. An open-top version came a year later, but at 63 and 19 units respectively, both were strictly small-batch production models.
