Lambo re-commits to ICE cars until 2035 and hopefully beyond

According to Paolo Racchetti, the director of the Lamborghini Temerario development team, the Italian carmaker plans to keep using that supercar’s V8 for at least two full generations, i.e., until the EU ICE car ban of 2035. Furthermore, the company is looking for ways to “work around” the impending ban, The Drive reports.

Even as the industry gradually shifts towards electrified and fully electric transports, Lamborghini considers its all-new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 uniquely efficient – even by the strict modern standards. Featuring a flat-plane crank, a pair of high-end turbos and a supporting electric motor, it can rev up to 10,000 RPM and slam the wheels with 800 PS (789 hp / 588 kW) all by its own. The e-motor only contributes a further 120 PS (118 hp / 88 kW).

In his interview to The Drive, Racchetti emphasized that the engine was designed to be used exclusively by the Temerario supercar lineup. As such, it won’t be installed in the company’s other cars, at least not for the time being. He declined further comment on the ICE car ban of 2035, but we suppose that Lambo could be looking for a synthetic fuel mix that would allow it to pass all emission tests and keep these cars on the streets. Aside from that, it is possible that the Italian automaker hopes to persuade the EU authorities to postpone or even abolish the mandatory EV adoption strategy altogether. Considering the state of the market right now, this also looks like a possibility.
