The police department of Torrance, California, has published a video featuring a group of people sawing a catalytic converter off a car. “Cat theft” has been on the rise in the recent years, so this particular crime alone wouldn’t have been newsworthy – if not for a curious detail.
One of the alleged perpetrators drove a yellow Lamborghini Urus to the crime scene. According to the police, the incident occurred at Street 184, Block 3800 at around 4 A.M. on November 9, 2022. Surveillance cameras spotted four people, one of whom was standing guard over the remaining three, who climbed under a white van to steal the catalytic converter.
The license plate of the Urus was unfortunately never recorded, and it remains unknown at this time whether the person driving the luxury super-SUV was the owner or rented it.
Reports say around 1,600 catalytic converters were stolen in California every month last year. The state itself accounted for 37 percent of all such thefts nationwide.
