Lancia announces a trio of electric cars, has sights set on Mercedes-Benz

Italian niche car manufacturer Lancia (part of Stellantis) has plans that involve introducing three new vehicles, including an SUV, and becoming an all-electric automaker in six years.

The company intends to design these new models drawing inspiration from its rich automotive past, Carscoops reports referencing comments made by Lancia execs. It also targets the premium segment of the market, considering Mercedez-Benz one of its primary rivals.

The first battery-powered Lancia is slated arrive in two years’ time and succeed the current Ypsilon hatchback (see video), which also happens to be the only production Lancia on the market right now. It will have a hybrid modification, too, but that one will only stay in production for four years, executives say.

By 2026, the company will have launched a new electric SUV under the revived name “Aurelia”. Back in mid-20th century, Lancia produced coupes and convertibles by that name. two years later, another iconic badge will be resurrected with the coming of the hatchback-shaped Delta EV.

All three production vehicles will sport a retro-inspired design reimagined with modern stylistic cues. For one thing, all EVs will sport backlit faux grilles at the front.

The interiors will also remind drivers of the glorious past days, evoking associations with classical Italian furniture. Lancia aspires to be the most active user of recycled materials in the whole Stellantis Group, and promises Mercedes-Benz levels of interior comfort.

Modern features are also on the list of priorities. For instance, the company will be outfitting new cars with SALA (Sound Air Light Augmented), a holistic interface granting easy control over audio, HVAC, and ambient lighting.

Lancia says it will first aim to expand its sales network in Europe, where it will be opening up to a hundred new dealerships in the coming years.
