New Lancia Ypsilon goes for a skinny dip in France, gets caught on camera

The first camo-free photos of Lancia’s dripping-wet Ypsilon hatchback are here courtesy of L’est Republicain. Apparently, the test car somehow ended up in a canal in Montbéliard, France, and had to be fished out with a crane.

The French newspaper doesn’t explicitly say it’s an Ypsilon, but you can zoom in on the images and see the badges for yourself. With the police staying tight-lipped about the curious incident, the circumstances surrounding it are unknown. All we know is that a team of divers had to assist a crane operator in the recovery.

Back to the images, though. As you can see, the rear door handles are concealed in the c-pillars, the wheel arches are glossy black, and the taillights sport Y-patterns. The tailgate has two spoilers installed, the lower one creating the model’s signature rear end protrusion that the earlier camouflaged prototypes used to have as well. In terms of the roofline and hood outlines, the Ypsilon looks distantly related to the Opel Corsa, which is rumored to be its chassis donor.

Last but not least, you can discern some interior elements, like a large display in the middle of the dashboard.
