Lancia ushers in the brand-new Ypsilon EV, really a rebadged Peugeot 208

Lancia’s only car in production right now – the Ypsilon – has just transitioned into its next generation. The full premiere will be held in Milan, Italy on February 14, but all the photos are already here.

The technical details are pending. All we know right now is that the new Ypsilon will offer 402 km (250 miles) of range on a charge. In line with the strategy of Stellantis Group revealed in the spring of 2022, the car will be Lancia’s last gas-powered model and simultaneously its first electric one.

The exclusively electric version seen here is known as the Limited Edition Cassina. It will be coming to the market in a production run capped at 1,906 units, each given a unique serial number and a certificate. The number is a reference to the founding year of Lancia & C. Fabbrica Automobili.

Chances are good you’ve already seen the exterior thanks to numerous spy shots circulating online. In its flagship spec, the new Ypsilon shares a few design features with the last year’s Pu+Ra HPE Concept. These include a three-beam “light signature” at the front and Stratos-style round headlights. Still, foe all these individual touches, there’s no mistaking that the car runs on the same chassis as the Opel Cora and the Peugeot 208.

Inside, the dashboard and the infotainment system get their own, separate displays. A round mini-table on the center console functions as a wireless phone charger.

Like the concept car mentioned above, the production hatchback utilizes an advanced assist system known as Sound Air Light Augmented (SALA). It governs the multimedia system, the climate control and the ambient lighting. “Sala” literally means “living room” in Italian, and that was Lancia’s main source of design inspiration for the cabin. The carmaker even teamed up with furniture manufacturer Cassina to come up with a number of cozy-looking interior hues and quality trimming materials.
