Land Rover plans to join the electric car craze with its own crossover

When Land Rover registered the Road Rover trademark two years ago, few suspected that the company would later use it to denote its first all-electric crossover SUV.

Earlier rumors claimed that the company intended to use the denotation ‘Road Rover’ exclusively for soft-roader cars, or even for its first-even sedan (see video for details). As it now turns out, however, the name will be given to a crossover-shaped EV with limited off-road qualities.

Once the Road Rover hits the market, it will have to compete against the Audi e-tron and the upcoming Porsche Macan EV. As for the placement and pricing, it will most likely occupy the middle position between the Range Rover Evoque and Velar. It is rumored that Land rover will reuse the new Jaguar XJ platform to produce the model.

The series is expected to ship with a 90-kWh battery sufficient for up to 460 kilometers (285 miles) of range. The British manufacturer will probably establish its own battery production line, although cooperation with BMW is also possible.

In the future, Land Rover expects to switch all or nearly all of its models to electric power. More details will be revealed in 2020.
