The car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover has developed a self-driving car (or, rather, passenger capsule) with virtual eyes that try and mimic the eye-to-eye contact between the pedestrian and the car. Watch the video for the best explanation of how it works.
The authors of the project argue that the new technology will enable the pedestrians to see whether the car has detected them and is going to stop before the crossing. Cognitive psychologists, who are also part of the team, try to understand whether a simulation like this can increase the pedestrians’ trust towards self-driving cars and convince them that they can cross safely.
Jaguar Land Rover has been developing its own autonomous driving systems for quite a long time. Within the framework of the CORTEX project, Jaguar engineers are creating a multidimensional sensor matrix that would support the highest SAE level possible. The system will rely on artificial intelligence for proper functioning.
