Over the Dunes and Far Away: New Defender completes a 200,000 km long desert ride

With just a month remaining until the international premiere, Land Rover has released videos and photos showing the next-generation Defender running its final pre-production tests.

The SUV is shown climbing to 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) above sea level and ascending 100-meter (330-feet) tall dunes in the United Arab Emirates with the outdoor temperature far above the 40°С (104°F) mark. The ride went on for 200,000 kilometers (~124,250 miles).

Among other locations, the car was tested on the perpetually winding Jabal Al Jais highway in the UAE. Land Rover drivers were in the same team with Red Cross representatives for the duration of the test drive (the British SUV marque has a partnership history with the Red Cross spanning 65 years).

Since the testing began, test mules of the new Defender have covered at least 1,200,000 kilometers (~745,000 miles) total in North America, Kenya and Middle East.

From what little is known about the upcoming Land Rover Defender to date, it is official that there will be an all-electric version, as well as pickup truck and long-wheelbase variants along with the traditional 3- and 5-seaters.

The premiere is scheduled for the 2019 International Motor Show Germany due in Frankfurt on September 12-22, 2019.
