Land Rover talks about the Defender’s younger cousin

The new Land Rover Defender, which you can see in our gallery here, celebrated premiere last year, but the company wants to expand the range by offering a downsized version of the SUV to compete against the likes of BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

According to the manufacturer, the Land Rover 80 (the name is not official yet and may change before the launch) will preserve the design highlights of its larger sibling and will be based on the same chassis, albeit shortened and simplified. It will probably only be available as a five-seater.

Power-wise, the compact SUV will likely make do with turbocharged three- and four-cylinder engines, although a hybrid powertrain is also possible. 4WD will be optional.

Finally, at around £25,000, the alleged Land Rover 80 will be priced at approximately two-thirds of the price of the entry-level Defender.

The company is looking into expanding the lineup in the opposite direction as well. Aside from the currently available Defender 90 and 110, a new spec called 130 may emerge in the future with the same wheelbase length as the 110, but enough space inside for a third row of seats.
