LR Freelander coming back on Chery platform

Reports are coming in that Jaguar Land Rover is planning to bring back the Freelander nameplate to produce electric cars. Chinese automaker Chery will supply the necessary tech.

The original Land Rover Freelander was a compact crossover vehicle that went on sale in 1997 and was discontinued in 2015 (see the gallery and the video). The revived badge will not be used for any single model, instead denoting a whole range of EVs. The production is planned to start at the Suzhou factory In China with the domestic market being the first on the list and the exports scheduled for later years.

The JLR-Chery joint enterprise in China was founded 12 years ago, but hasn’t done any exports so far, only producing localized Land Rover versions for the local market.
